According to the Disease Surveillance of the Department of Health (DoH), 750 newly diagnosed HIV cases were reported for December 2016 alone. Out of the 750 new cases, 53 were accounted as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), which comprised 7% of the total newly diagnosed, 50 OFWs were male with an average age of 32 years.
PAFPI was the only chosen HIV NGO in the Philippines to be the beneficiary of the National Gift Auction of the 65th Miss Universe competition. The Auction was held on January 23, 2017, at the Forbes Ballroom of the Conrad Hotel. Each of the 87 contenders for the title of Miss Universe donated a gift from their home countries. The gifts were put up for bids at the event. Ten items were put up for live auction in the ballroom, while the rest were auctioned by silent bidding. PAFPI was chosen through Pass it Forward, which is the official charity partner of the 65th Miss Universe competition.
The auction was huge success. The amount raised will be a tremendous importance for PAFPI’s possibility to continue working to help persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Furthermore, the event itself was a milestone in the fight against stigma and discrimination. All of this was made possible by your choice of PAFPI as the beneficiary. For that, PAFPI’s board, our employees, our volunteers as well as the many recipients of PAFPI’s assistance are truly honoured and grateful.
Working together for six years, Positive Action Philippines, Inc. (PAFPI) and MAC AIDS Fund (MAF) forged a partnership to bring comfort and care to people living with HIV (PLHIVs). Hence, PAFPI and the officers and staff of MAC Cosmetic Philippines, as part of MAC’s participation in the annual World AIDS Day every December 1st, went for an immersion at the H4 Ward and Outpatient Department at San Lazaro Hospital.
The high record of HIV incidence for October 2016, which accounts to 819 new HIV cases, can be attributed to the intensive HIV education of the government through the Department of Health (DOH) and Non-Government organizations like the Positive Action Foundation Philippines, Inc. (PAFPI), shared by Rodel Navarra, PAFPI’s Chief Operating Officer.
“Addressing the psychological and social problems of people living with HIV and their affected families is crucial that is why we have trained counselors and peer educators to provide psychosocial support to our clients,” explained Mr. Rodel Navarra, Chief Operating Officer of Positive Action Foundation Philippines, Inc. (PAFPI).
According to the HIV and AIDS Registry of the Department of Health (DoH) released last June 2016, the number of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) comprised about 12% of the total HIV cases wherein 84% are male with an average age of 32. Due this, Positive Action Foundation Philippines, Inc. (PAFPI) partnered with manning agencies to ensure that departing OFWs are armed with enough knowledge about HIV and AIDS.
